Dr. Harvey provides advanced diagnostic procedures in the evaluation and treatment of allergic conditions, including:

  • Asthma
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Eczema
  • Drug, food, and insect allergy
  • Latex allergy
  • Urticaria (hives, welts)
  • Anaphylaxis (severe reactions to foods, drugs, ant bites, or insect stings)
  • Angioedema (swelling of the body, often the face or hands)

Your immune system is essential for fighting infections. Dr. Harvey evaluates a history of frequent, severe, or unusual infections, including:

  • Frequent ear infections
  • Sinusitis
  • Bronchitis
  • Chronic cough
  • Pneumonia
  • Abscesses
  • Skin infections
  • Recurrent thrush

We strive to provide the most up-to-date diagnostic tests and treatment options for our patients. Newer diagnostic testing is typically rapid and is often almost painless. By identifying the causes of a patient’s symptoms, we can offer ways to avoid or decrease exposure to triggers.

  • Allergy skin testing: A small amount of the suspected allergy trigger (allergen) is placed on the skin, often on the forearm or upper back. The skin is gently pricked to introduce the allergen under the skin, and the skin is observed for any reaction. Results are usually obtained within 15 minutes. Certain medications are stopped 5-7 days prior to skin testing.
  • CAP testing: This blood testing is sensitive for identifying allergens causing allergic disorders. The advantage of this testing is that medications do not need to be stopped.
  • Immunotherapy (“Allergy shots”): This treatment involves administering increasing doses of allergens to which a patient is allergic. This therapy causes the immune system to become less sensitive to the allergens over time. When exposed to the allergens in the future, the patient’s allergy symptoms are often significantly less. Trees, weeds, grass, cat, dog, dust mite, mold, and insect venom allergens can be used in immunotherapy.
  • Patch testing: Allergens are applied to the skin surface and covered for 2-3 days. The skin is observed for several days for any skin reaction. This testing is used to identify causes of allergic contact dermatitis (nickel, chemicals, fragrances).
  • Peak flow: A peak flow meter is a hand-held device that measures the patient’s ability to blow air out from the lungs. Patients with asthma should record their peak flow daily, as this measurement improves asthma management.
  • Spirometry (Lung function testing): This test records detailed measurements of a patient’s lung function and is used in assessing asthma and emphysema/COPD. Often, a medication such as albuterol is given to assess for improvement after the medication is given.

Special considerations:

  • Pediatrics: As a pediatric allergist, Dr. Harvey examines children in a way that helps them to relax and cooperate during the visit.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnant patients with asthma need close monitoring. They also need careful medication selection to minimize any adverse effects of medications or risks from uncontrolled asthma.
  • Workers: Occupational asthma is the development of asthma symptoms only in the workplace in a healthy worker. A similar condition occurs when pre-existing asthma is aggravated by exposures in the workplace
